Lee (played by Bruce Lee) is a Shaolin warrior in Hong Kong, considered to be his master’s finest student as he knows martial arts skills are truly gained through philosophical insight. His notoriety has earned him an invitation to a martial arts tournament organised by the mysterious businessman Han (played by Shih Kien). Though he initially refuses, as it goes against his moral code, Lee’s master informs him that Han was once a Shaolin student himself, who betrayed them to use his skills to gain wealth and power. This included gaining ownership of the island where the tournament is held, at a time before it fell under the jurisdiction of the Hong Kong government. Lee’s master asks him to cooperate with the government as their spy, to gather evidence they can use to stop Han, thereby restoring honor to the Shaolin. Before leaving, Lee informs his father, who decides to tell Lee the truth about the death of his sister, so he can pay proper respect at her grave on the way. During preparations for the previous tournament three years earlier, Han’s men came to the city and ran into Lee’s father and sister. Led by Oharra (Robert Wall), Han’s bodyguard, they beat Lee’s father unconscious while his sister tried to fight their way free. Chased and cornered, she chose to stab herself to death rather than be raped. Although he intends to complete his mission honorably, Lee finds he must also take vengeance. Begging forgiveness at the graves of his mother and sister, he heads for the island aboard Han’s private junk boat.
5/5 Stars.
I didn't expect much from this movie knowing that it was made in the '70s, however it FAR exceeded ANY expectations I would have had. Although, I wish there was more KUNG-FU!!~
Can someone please resurrect Bruce Lee 'cause this guy knew how to make a martial arts film, and he knew how to kick major (_v_). Great movie! You've just got to watch this film. 5/5
